Privacy Policy

PaceBuddy is built around a simple commitment: your data stays yours. The app works best when it knows how you're feeling and how your day is going — but that context is used to help you, not to profile or monetize you.

What we collect

Account information

When you register, we collect your email address and a hashed password. We use this to identify your account and sync your data across devices.

Session data

Every focus session generates a record: the task label you entered, the duration, the companion you used, the start and end time, and how the session ended (completed, extended, or interrupted). This is the core of what makes the app useful — your session history powers your companion's recaps and patterns.

Self-reported state data

Before and during sessions, you may optionally report your energy level, focus clarity, pain level, brain fog, dizziness, or other wellbeing indicators. This data is:

This is not medical data. PaceBuddy is a productivity and planning tool, not a medical device or health service. We do not interpret, diagnose, or provide medical recommendations based on anything you report. See "Health and Accessibility Features" below.

Companion and break data

We record which companion you use, which break biomes you visit, and your self-reported break quality ratings. This helps your companion learn which breaks actually restore you.

Bring-your-own-key (BYOK) AI keys

If you add an Anthropic or OpenAI API key in Settings, we store it on your device only, in iOS Keychain. When you make an AI request (plan, replan, recap), we send your key as a single-use HTTP header to our backend, which forwards it to the provider you chose. Our backend does not log, persist, or otherwise store your key — it traverses memory only and is discarded after the request. We have audited the backend for this guarantee (services have no Sentry, no request logging middleware, no error reporters that capture request bodies).

Calendar (optional, on-device only)

If you grant calendar access, PaceBuddy reads today's events to inform daily plans. Calendar data stays on your device. When you generate an AI plan, only event titles + start/end times are sent for that one request. Calendar data is never persisted on our servers.

Purchase data

If you purchase the Founder's Pack or other in-app items, we receive a purchase confirmation from Apple's StoreKit. We store which products you own. We do not receive or store your payment method, card number, or billing address — Apple handles all payment processing.

Device and technical data

We collect basic technical information: app version, iOS version, device type (iPhone/iPad), and crash reports. We do not collect your device name, IDFA, or any persistent device identifier.

What we do not collect

Health and accessibility features

PaceBuddy includes optional companion modes designed for users with POTS, ME/CFS, Long COVID, ADHD, autism, chronic pain, dyslexia, and other chronic illness or neurodivergent conditions.

These features are planning and pacing tools, not medical tools. They help you:

They do not:

Self-reported health indicators (energy, pain, brain fog, dizziness) are stored securely and are never used for advertising, shared with insurers, employers, or healthcare systems, or sold to any third party.

How we store your data

Your account data and session history are stored on servers operated by our hosting provider. Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest.

Authentication tokens are stored in your device's Keychain — not in iCloud, not in UserDefaults.

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your data is deleted within 30 days.

Data sharing

We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers.

We may share limited data with service providers who help us operate the app (hosting infrastructure, crash reporting). These providers are contractually prohibited from using your data for their own purposes.

We may disclose data if required by law or legal process. We will notify you if we receive such a request unless prohibited by law.

Your rights

Access: you can request a copy of all data we hold about you by emailing support@pace-buddy.com.

Deletion: you can delete your account from within the app (Settings → Account → Delete Account) or by emailing us. Deletion removes your account and all associated data within 30 days.

Export: we plan to add a data export feature (sessions, tags, patterns) in a future update.

Correction: if any data we hold is inaccurate, you can update it from within the app or contact us.

Children

PaceBuddy is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete the account.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will notify you via email or an in-app notice before the changes take effect. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent version.
